Apple Launches New iPads This Week; Microsoft/Nokia Follow Suit With New Windows Tablets

On Tuesday, three tech giants are expected to unveil new tablets that are said to be potential game changers in the tablet market. Apple will be hosting an event on Tuesday and is expected to unveil its next-generation iPads. Microsoft, the software giant, together with Nokia, once regarded as the mobile giant, will be holding an event on the same day, where its expected to unveil the Finnish company’s first tablet powered by Microsoft’s Windows OS, in Abu Dhabi.

The late Steve Jobs made it clear before that he doesn’t see smaller tablets dominating the mobile realm, but Samsung has since proved that tablets in various sizes are quite in demand for consumers. With the change in leadership, Apple has slowly begun adapting to devices of various sizes. Now the company offers tablets in two sizes, and its iPhones are getting bigger than older models.

Tomorrow, Apple is said to be unveiling two new tablets – newer versions of the iPad and the iPad mini. Previous reports stated that the new iPad will sport a look that’s similar to the old iPad mini, and will be thinner, lighter and more comfortable to hold than previous iPad models. For the new iPad mini, reports stated that it will now come with a Retina Display. No leaks have surfaced yest as to whether the new tablets will feature the Touch ID feature that comes with the iPhone 5s.

Aside from the new iPads, Apple is also expected to officially launch the Mac OS X Mavericks and the new cylindrical-shaped Mac Pro.

Nokia + Microsoft


Before Nokia gets engulfed by Microsoft, the Finnish company will be unleashing a number of new devices. The company will be staging a special event in Abu Dhabi tomorrow, where it is expected to unveil no less than six new devices, one of which is said to be a tablet, another a phablet.

The Nokia Lumia 1520, codenamed Bandit, is said to be Nokia’s first phablet, featuring a 6-inch, 1080p HD display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon quad-core processor. The Bandit will be running Windows Phone 8 Upgrade 3. Nokia’s phablet is likely to be priced between $700-$900, depending on memory capacity, and will be available in black, cyan and yellow. Then there’s Nokia’s tablet, the Lumia 2520 Windows RT, which has been codenamed Nokia Sirius and is said to feature a 10.1-inch 5-point touchscreen display with a 1920×1080 resolution, 6MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 10 hours of solid battery life on LTE connectivity in a single charge, microSD port to extend the 32GB internal storage, a Micro HDMI connector, and a Micro USB port. Pricing starts at $499 and the device will launch on Verizon on November 17, and will be available in red, black and cyan.
