Build Bridges with the Working Class

I was struggling to understand why so many people living on the margins of society would vote for a candidate like Donald Trump. Here is a personal story I would like to tell. While working with the election board in Florida, I was approached by a working class white worker who asked for my credentials. My credentials were clearly seen on my clothing. I assumed he was probably a Trump supporter. Instead of getting offensive based on his tone, I attempted to engage him in a personal discussion. He told me that he has been jobless by more than 4 years and was struggling to feed his family. I offered him several agencies he might contact for help. His whole attitude changed after I gave him agencies to contact. We must reach out to everyone who have been shut out of this economic. Many people voted for Trump because they have been shut out of the economy. We progressives on the left must build bridges with these workers.
